I’d be lying to you if I said it was going to be a ‘walk in the park’. It’s not. Coming out is hard, it’s a tough conversation to have and above anything else, it’s going to be really freakin’ awkward. Buuuutt once it’s done, you’ll feel incredible. As cliche as it is, it really does feel like the world has been lifted off your shoulders.
So today I thought I would pass on my words of wisdom, use my experience and give you a little advice on coming out. Whether you’re a man or woman, gay or bi or if its whether you identify as male or female, whatever your coming out path is, I hope some of the tips in today’s post help and make it that bit easier.
// Be Sure \\
If you don’t feel 100% sure about what you’re saying, then keep it to yourself. Once you’ve said it, you can’t take it back. If it means experimenting a little, then do it. As long as you’re safe. You need to be absolutely sure about yourself before you have that conversation with anyone… especially family.
// It’s Not All Rainbows & Sparkle \\
The stereotype is definitely built that way. But it really isn’t going to be a life full of glitter… unless you want it to be. Coming out doesn’t automatically mean you have to walk around with a face full of makeup, a pink feather bower and prance the streets singing Madonna’s Greatest Hits. You can be gay, without being camp.
// Everything Will Be Alright \\
As I’ve said in the video that goes along with today’s post, what’s the worst that’s going to happen? If people can’t handle it and if they can’t support you, then do you really want them in your life? Trust me, everything will be alright… actually no, everything will be a thousand times better.
// Don’t look back \\
Once you’re out, you’re out. Stepping into the light and living your life as true as possible is the best feeling in the world. Coming from the shadows, where you’re scared to be yourself and horrified at the thought of anyone exposing you, to stepping into the light where you can be free, with no secrets and everyone excepting you… it really is incredible. Remember, don’t look back.
If you take anything away from today’s post, let it be this; Everything will be alright. You have one life and that’s it. Why would you want to spend it living a lie, living in secret & not being your true self? Live your most authentic life, don’t miss a moment and most of all, enjoy it.
I hope this post has helped. If you need to talk, you’re more than welcome to DM me, if you’ve already come out, why not share your experience in the comments below and if you’re just about to come out… then bloody go for it!
